Corporate climate action
must be ambitious, science-
aligned and high-integrity.
While Net Zero has been a focus for many organisations over the last several years, flimsy transition plans, a lack of accountability, and overreliance on carbon offsets have led to progress being slow at best, and misleading or non-existent at worst.
We believe it’s time for a new benchmark in corporate climate accountability: Real Zero. Real Zero is exactly what it sounds like: Science-based decarbonisation that actually phases out fossil fuel use without overreliance on false climate solutions like offsetting or carbon capture and storage.
Leadership on the road to Real Zero is paramount. And Climate Integrity will be championing those organisations that are applying science, integrity, transparency and justice to their Real Zero plans.
Real Zero Leaders
In 2025, three Australian corporations that are leading the way on
best practice to innovate, implement, advocate and disclose on real
zero. climate: Fortescue, IKEA and Lendlease.
The resulting study was the result of months of deep research,
analysis and collaboration with the respective teams, and the outputs
are designed to both celebrate the work being done, help each
organisation continue improving, and to prove to other organisations
that Real Zero is achievable when leadership, strategy, ambition and
commitment are employed.

IKEA
IKEA, one of the world’s largest furniture retailers, is committed to climate action and the company’s role in maintaining a liveable planet. That’s why IKEA has made sustainability a central part of its business strategy – committing to ambitious and achievable real zero targets that don’t rely on offsets.
The company has set targets to decarbonise every part of its business, from production to retail, prioritising genuine emissions reductions, making it a leader in global decarbonisation. It integrates clear climate goals into the business plan and galvanises staff to deliver against them, making a commitment to innovation that keeps up maximum pressure to decarbonise, even when it is difficult. IKEA wants to set a new standard for business climate action that drives changes and inspires the broader business community to go further.

"Gone are the days where sustainability is on the edge of the business … it’s not about having big sustainability teams, it’s about baking it into the business plans, your goals, your country goals, and making sure that it’s part of running business. Otherwise it just won’t happen.”
